Hair Transplant

Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your results may vary.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Nearly 50% of men in the U.S. experience hair loss, as well as approximately 20% of women. The reasons for hair loss typically differ between men and women.

  • In men, heredity is the leading contributor to hair loss. Male pattern baldness, called androgenic alopecia, results in a receding hairline or thinning of the crown. Fortunately, this form of hair loss can be corrected.
  • In women, hormonal changes during menopause can cause thinning and pattern loss. Other causes of hair loss in women include severe infection, high fever, certain medications, diet, birth control pills, thyroid disease, childbirth, and cancer treatments.

Hair Transplant Candidates

Men with male pattern baldness are typical candidates for hair transplant surgery. For many women, hair surgery is an appropriate option to fill in scars from facial cosmetic surgery, thinning eyebrows, and (occasionally) genetic hair loss. While the age of the candidate is not a crucial factor in having a successful hair transplant, anyone experiencing rapid hair loss should wait until their hair loss stabilizes before undergoing NeoGraft. Once this occurs, dense-growing hair in the back of the scalp can be transplanted to the desired areas. During your consultation, Dr. Calobrace or Dr. Quintero will help you establish realistic expectations for your results.

About Hair Transplant Surgery

NeoGraft, our preferred hair restoration method, relies on a pneumatic device to gently harvest hair follicles in very small units, avoiding the scars produced by the strip method and keeping the follicles alive throughout treatment. Rather than harvesting the follicles by hand, which can be time-consuming, the NeoGraft device harvests multiple follicles at once, for a quicker and more efficient treatment. Dr. Calobrace or Dr. Quintero then places the follicles in the balding area at an angle that best emulates natural hair growth. During this process, your scalp is numbed with a local anesthetic, keeping you comfortable.

Micro-graft hair transplantation is a technique requiring hundreds of micro- and mini-grafts implanted during treatment sessions spaced about 6 to 8 months apart. The number of sessions is determined by the size of the recipient area and thickness desired. While Dr. Calobrace typically places 500 to 700 grafts in a single session, he also offers Megasession Hair Transplantation, which involves placing over 1,000 grafts in a single session to provide greater results more quickly.

How Much Does Hair Transplant Surgery Cost?

Typically 500 to 1,000 grafts or more can be harvested during each procedure, allowing for the placement of 1,000 to 2,500 hairs or more. The cost of your hair transplant procedure is determined by the number of hairs being transplanted.

What Is NeoGraft®?

NeoGraft is a follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant device. The NeoGraft computer-assisted handpiece uses pneumatic pressure to harvest individual hair follicles from the back of your head, where your hair is the densest and healthiest. A certified NeoGraft technician then implants the follicles into thinning or balding areas.

NeoGraft is the least invasive hair transplantation method available. The risk of bleeding or damage to blood vessels and nerves is minimal. Because NeoGraft is automated, it allows for a quick, efficient transplantation process. That's what makes NeoGraft the preferred option for hair restoration among our patients and surgeons.

The Benefits of Mini- and Micro-Grafts

Hair on the scalp naturally grows in groups of 1 to 5 hairs. These groups are called follicular units. Hair transplant surgery with mini- and micro-grafts provides the most effective method of achieving natural-looking results.

Micro-grafts contain only 1 or 2 hairs and are used primarily along the hairline to create a fuller, natural appearance. Mini-grafts contain 3 to 5 hairs and add fullness to areas behind the hairline. Our technicians place both micro- and mini-grafts on the scalp so that they grow in the same direction as existing hair, avoiding a "plugged" appearance.

By offering micro- and mini-grafts in addition to large-volume FUE, the professionals at CaloAesthetics® Plastic Surgery Center can create completely customized results that remedy your specific concerns.

What to Expect During Recovery

Recovery after your NeoGraft procedure is not particularly uncomfortable. In fact, you should be able to manage your symptoms with only over-the-counter medication. Although you should avoid strenuous activity, such as working out, for several days after your appointment, it's safe to go back to work as soon as you feel comfortable doing so — typically just 1 or 2 days after your treatment.

Be sure to keep cool and avoid unprotected sun exposure for at least 3 weeks after your NeoGraft treatment, as sun damage or overheating can affect your results.

For the first 2 days after NeoGraft, your head may be bandaged or dressed. After we remove this dressing at your follow-up appointment, you may gently wash your hair. We offer you extensive aftercare instructions in the days, weeks, and months following your NeoGraft treatment, so you can rest assured that you're not doing anything to compromise the results.
