I recently published an article in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal titled ‘Posterior Wedge Resection: A More Aesthetic Labiaplasty.’ Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the vaginal area typically the labia minora. The hyperplastic labia minora can often cause physical discomfort with exercise or sexual intercourse. Other women seeking cosmetic genital surgery often complain of the appearance of the vaginal area even in clothing. By reducing the size of the labia minora, labiaplasty can help to improve the appearance and reduce discomfort associated with activity.
In the article, I describe a new technique to improve the appearance of the vaginal area in a natural way. Previous procedures were excellent in reducing the size of the labia minora but left an unnatural appearance to the labia minora. I wanted a procedure where even under close inspection, scars and signs of surgery were not obvious. The outer part of the labia is thinner and smooth. This part was often resected leaving the labia minora with a bulky appearance. In my procedure, I preserve this thinner portion and remove the thicker inner part of the labia. Scars are left in the natural folds of the labia minora and disappear.
Labiaplasty can be performed under local anesthesia and takes about an hour. Other procedures such as breast augmentation can be combined and performed at the same time. Most of the swelling will resolve in a few weeks. Patients usually return to work in a few days and can resume sexual activity in six weeks.
I have had overwhelmingly positive response from women undergoing labiaplasty procedure. All have reported significant improvement in not only in their personal hygiene but with their self-esteem. They feel more confident in clothes and have no discomfort with physical activity.
In the next topic on labiaplasty will include other procedures to improve the appearance of the vaginal area including clitoral hood reduction and fat transfer to mons and labia majora.
