Plastic Surgeon Discusses FDA Approved Silicone-Gel Implants
After seven years of research, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new silicone breast implant that has been highly anticipated by plastic surgeons for years. Nicknamed the “gummy bear,” the implant has a firm silicone gel consistency and a dense, semi-solid teardrop shape.
Dr. M. Bradley Calobrace, a board-certified plastic surgeon, explains that this shaped implant is the latest choice women will have in determining their best implant match. “From selecting silicone or saline to choosing hard or soft, a woman must weigh the pros and cons for each option,” says Dr. Calobrace. “The gummy bear implants offer unique advantages to saline implants as well as other silicone implants, and will give patients a more natural option.”
In addition, a recent study released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons suggests that the new anatomically “shaped” implants provided women with just as favorable an outcome as women who went with traditional round implants.
“The findings show women reported a high level of satisfaction with the outcome,” says Dr. Calobrace. “The new gel implants have a textured surface which provides a place for scar tissue to adhere, whereas smooth implants are more prone to excessive scar tissue. In addition, liquid-filled implants are at risk of rupturing and leaking, while the silicone-gel implants are less likely to leak and can last longer than saline implants.”
A Plastic Surgeon from the Calobrace Plastic Surgery Center is available to talk about the importance of this unique type of breast implant, as well as discuss the difference between this implant and other silicone and saline implants. To schedule an interview, please contact me directly.
