Plastic Surgeon Explains What Needs to be Considered
According to a study completed by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation was the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in 2012. But before deciding to undergo the procedure, there are many components to consider. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. M Bradley Calobrace gives his advice for choices surrounding breast enhancement procedures.
“There are a lot of trade-offs that individuals must consider when having their breasts enhanced,” says Dr. Calobrace. “From size and implant type to perkiness, it’s crucial to analyze all of the decisions surrounding the surgery before diving in to come up with the best solution for you.”
Dr. Calobrace suggests breast augmentation patients consider the following:
- Hard vs. Soft: The type of implant varies depending on both surgeon preferences and patient preferences as well. With a harder implant, there is less wrinkling and dimpling, but there is also a less natural feel to the breast. Many women prefer the more natural shape and feel of silicone, but saline is considered safer.
- Implant Placement: Patients must consider whether they want the implant on top of or below the pectoral muscle. When performing breast augmentation, the plastic surgeon creates a pocket for each implant, either directly behind the breast tissue or under the pectoralis muscle.
- Physical Position: Women must also consider how high they would like the implant to be placed and how perky of an implant to select. Lifted, perky breasts give a youthful look while a teardrop shape may appear more natural.
- Implant Texture: As a natural reaction to a foreign object in the body, the body forms scar tissue to protect itself, which may create hardening of the breasts and a rippling effect. Using a textured implant helps reduce the risk of excessive scar tissue and allows the scar tissue to adhere to the implant instead.
“Once you’ve decided on the factors above, patients can consider physical implant size options,” continues Dr. Calobrace. “Remember that bigger isn’t always better and pick something that will help you feel comfortable and confident.”
